The Short Answer
Yes — load-bearing walls can almost always be removed. But in California, removing or altering one is structural work that requires a building permit, and nearly every jurisdiction will ask for engineered plans showing the replacement beam, the posts that carry it, and the load path down to the foundation. Skip that step and you're gambling on a stop-work order, a failed inspection, or a problem that surfaces at resale.
Is the Wall Actually Load-Bearing?
Common indicators — none of them conclusive on their own:
- Joist direction: walls running perpendicular to floor or ceiling joists usually carry them.
- Stacking: a wall sitting over a girder, foundation stem wall, or another wall below is likely structural.
- Joist splices: if joists lap or splice over the wall, it's bearing.
- Roof loads: ridge supports, purlin braces, or non-trussed roofs often bear on interior walls.
And the one contractors outside California often miss: a wall can be structural even when it carries almost no gravity load. In seismic country, interior and exterior walls frequently act as shear walls — part of the building's lateral system. Remove one, and the house may still stand up fine but no longer meet seismic requirements. That's exactly the kind of thing a plan checker in an SDC D jurisdiction will catch.

Temporary support is part of the job
Before the wall comes out, loads must be shored on both sides of the wall (joists often bear from both directions). Your plans should note temporary support requirements — inspectors increasingly look for it, and it protects your crew.

- Confirm the wall's role — gravity, lateral, or both. Photos, a joist-direction sketch, and the year built are usually enough for an engineer to assess remotely.
- Get the beam engineered — a sized beam, posts, connections, and footing check in a permit-ready detail.
- Pull the permit — over-the-counter in many cities when the engineering is complete and clean.
- Shore, demo, install, inspect — with the stamped detail on site.
The sequence that backfires: demo first, "we'll figure out the beam later." Now the structure is open, the schedule is burning, and the engineering happens under pressure — which is when openings get undersized headers and point loads land on nothing.
